When moving to Mauritius, you must ensure that you carry your passport as well as of all those family members who are travelling to the country.

Original Bill of Lading (OBL)/ Express Release/ Telex Release/ Air Waybill (AWB)

A copy of Orginal Bill of Lading must be submitted in advance when your shipment arrives at the destination to confirm the carrier’s receipt.

Passport Memo (Applicable for Returning Citizen)

Mauritius Citizens who are returning after a long stay in another country are applicable for a passport memo upon arrival in this country at the passport and Immigration Office that may take up to 7 days to acquire.

Inventory with Values (Diplomats)

It is suggested that owner of the items give a detailed list of all goods to be imported into the country, otherwise submission of a provisional entry is necessary to list all goods imported, which can consume lot of time.

Packing List

A packing list must be made before travelling to Mauritius in which each item to be shipped should be clearly mentioned for reference at the destination.

Bill of Entry/Customs Declaration (returning citizens, foreigners)

Both foreign as well as returning citizens are required to declare all the goods in advance which are eligible for duties or are restricted for entry into the country. The Bill of Entry or Customs declaration form is submitted electronically via Trade Net and further validated by customs.

Alcohol Declaration (returning citizens, foreigners)

If foreign or returning citizens are carrying alcohol when relocating to Mauritius then they have to declare the same in advance with all details like capacity, type, percentage of alcohol for customs clearance process. For importing alcohol into the country, you are liable for customs duty.

Original Occupational Permit/ Residence Permit

You should acquire an occupational permit or residence permit prior to consignment arrival to avoid demurrage and storage charges. If it is not available, a guarantee from bank must be provided, which may take at least 2 weeks. Alternatively, non-citizens can make cash payment to clear the goods.

Copy of Diplomatic Passport

It is necessary for foreign diplomats to carry a copy of their passport when relocating to Mauritius.

Two Copies of Letter of Exemption issued by the ministry of Foreign Affairs, obtained by the local Embassy (returning citizens, Diplomats, foreigners)

Mauritius returning citizens, foreigners, and diplomats must present a letter of exemption that is issued the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and acquired by the local embassy. This letter would exempt personal effects and household goods from customs duty and VAT.

Diplomatic Clearance Certificate (Diplomats)

If diplomats submit a diplomatic clearance certificate signed by respective embassy along with a detailed inventory list, they may import their household goods duty-free.

The Do’s

 

  • The primary step that counts is the advance planning of your move.
  • The next comes in this list is making a checklist to avoid any problem in future.
  • Then comes the Sensible Packing, that means, to assemble all the tools and objects that you are going to need. For this purpose, first make a list of all your requirements for the same, including the entire primary and smaller objects; start with boxes.
