International Checklist

3 Weeks Before the move
  • Contact the utility companies (electricity, gas, telephone, cable, etc.) and arrange to have your services terminated one day after your move.
  • Contact an expatriate organization at your new destination.
  • Notify your bank about your move. Make sure all outstanding bills have been paid and any autopay services have been terminated.

2 Weeks Before the move
  • Start eating perishables and good that cannot be moved, throw out and give the rest away.
  • Don't forget the pantry! Begin using up canned goods and frozen food; only buy items that will be used before the move. Ask your move coordinator if you can donate pantry items to charity.
  • Arrange childcare/pet sitters for moving day.
  • Contact your post office about redirecting your mail to your new address.

The Week of the move
  • Ask your mover for stickers, so that you can pre-mark which items are to be packed for the move and which ones should be packed for storage.
  • Make sure you have enough medication for two weeks after your move. Discuss your move with your doctor, who may be able to advise you on new doctors or can give advice on finding one.
  • Make sure you have all your documents in one place. Also, keep a spare set of your keys, as you may need them during any emergency.
  • Pack necessary items that you will need at your new home for first few couple of days.
  • Keep some local currency as you may need it when you arrive at your destination.

The Day before the move
  • Make sure you have some food and water on hand for moving day.
  • Make sure your important documents do not get packed.
  • Defrost your fridge/freezer.

Moving Day
  • Check and sign the inventory list.
  • When your home is empty, check it again, look inside cupboards and other hiding places to make sure everything's out.
  • Exchange contact information with the driver and verify that the destination address is correct.

Delivery Day
  • Check off each item on the inventory list.
  • The destination agent will arrange for custom clearance
